Authorities charged Dominic Miller and Lyndell Mays with murder following a Feb. 14, shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade, which left one woman dead and over 20 people injured. This brings the total of suspects charged in connection with the shooting to four, including two teenagers.
According to a statement from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office on Feb. 20, Miller and Mays are accused of second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and one count of unlawful weapon use.
Court documents and corroborating witness and video evidence reveal that the violence erupted from a dispute between Mays and a confronting group, who began arguing about why they were staring at each other. Documents reveal that Mays admitted to drawing and firing his weapon first, targeting and shooting at an individual at random as they ran away.
Miller reported that he returned fire after hearing gunshots and seeing a man shooting at him. Court documents state that Miller estimated he fired four to five shots.
While both Mays and Miller are charged with second degree murder, evidence points to Miller’s gunfire as the cause of 43-year-old Elizabeth Lopez-Galvan’s death. Lopez-Galvan was a mother of two and a local radio DJ.
Currently, both suspects are receiving medical treatment while detained on a $1 million bond each.
Prosecutors are seeking to charge the two teenagers, already arrested in connection with the shootings, as adults. The investigation into their involvement continues.
