President Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign has created an account on former President Donald Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social. Officials with Biden’s campaign said this is an effort to meet voters where they are.
In the first post on Truth Social on Monday, Oct.16, Biden’s campaign team wrote, “Converts welcome!” The team sees it as a chance to flip any unsure voters blue, as division ripples through the Republican Party.
Trump launched his social platform in April 2022, after he was banned from other social media following the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol for inciting violence.
“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” Twitter officials wrote.
After previous reports said it would not join Truth Social, the Biden campaign indicated on X that it joined the conservative platform mainly because it thought it would be “very funny.”
Biden edged out a narrow victory over Trump in the 2020 election, winning just a few battleground states. The move to Truth Social could help the Biden campaign sway some uncertain voters and go a long way in the 2024 presidential election.
As of Tuesday morning, Oct. 17, Biden’s reelection account has more than 14,000 followers.
