The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced a technological achievement during the week of Aug. 4, setting a new record for the deepest depth ever reached in a single day of drilling. The company successfully drilled more than 6,500 feet in just 24 hours, ultimately reaching an overall depth of over 24,000 feet.
During this project, the drilling operation penetrated 13 different layers of Earth. In order to accomplish this, CNPC utilized high-strength drill pipes, high-temperature-resistant drilling fluid capable of withstanding temperatures up to 428 degrees Fahrenheit and logging tools designed to function at depths of thousands of meters below the surface.
The operators of the well stated that the project is aimed at advancing the understanding of Earth’s internal structure and its geological evolution.
In addition to its scientific goals, the project will also gather information about the accumulation of oil and gas deep beneath the Earth’s surface.
