Congress has agreed to a $1.5 trillion bipartisan omnibus funding bill. The spending bill would fund the government through the end of the current fiscal year which ends September 30.
“It will address the major challenges we face—from COVID, to the vicious and immoral attack on Ukraine, to the need to lower costs for hardworking American families,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) tweeted.
The 2,700 page bill includes almost $14 billion to help Ukraine in its war against Russia.
“This needs to get done and get done yesterday,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said of the assistance for Ukraine.
The package also includes about $16 billion in Covid relief funding, which is less than President Biden requested from Congress. Under the terms of the bill, both defense and domestic spending increased. Domestic spending is up 7% to $730 billion. Defense spending is listed at $782 billion, up 6% from the previous fiscal year.
“This agreement provides significantly more money than the Biden Administration requested for defense and significantly less money than the Administration requested for non-defense,” McConnell wrote in a statement.
