The Justice Department unsealed charges against a think tank leader who claimed to have provided the FBI with information about the Biden family’s business dealing with China. Gal Luft, the co-director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, was accused of acting as an unregistered agent of China.
“As alleged, Gal Luft, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen and co-head of a Maryland think tank, engaged in multiple, serious criminal schemes,” U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said in a statement on Monday, July 10. “He subverted foreign agent registration laws in the United States to seek to promote Chinese policies by acting through a former high-ranking U.S. Government official; he acted as a broker in deals for dangerous weapons and Iranian oil; and he told multiple lies about his crimes to law enforcement.”
But that’s not the way Luft sees it. After he was initially arrested earlier this year, Luft said the Justice Department was targeting him because he provided info about the Bidens to the FBI.
“The US, claiming I’m an arms dealer. It would be funny if it weren’t tragic,” Luft tweeted in February. “I’ve never been an arms dealer. DOJ is trying to bury me to protect Joe,Jim&Hunter Biden.”
The unsealing of the think tank leader’s charges come as IRS whistleblowers accused the Justice Department of stymying an investigation into Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. Gary Shapley, who worked on the investigation, said his team was prevented from fully investigating the sources of Hunter Biden’s income.
Shapley also said the FBI had national security concerns about Hunter Biden’s ties to CEFC China Energy, a Chinese energy conglomerate with extensive ties to Luft. CEFC China Energy gave Luft’s think tank $350,000 in grants, and paid Hunter Biden at least $6 million in 2017 and 2018.
