On Oct. 6, 2022, the worst mass shooting in Thailand’s history has left at least 37 people dead including at least 24 children; North and South Korea escalate missile firings; and a federal appeals court has ruled against DACA.
35 dead in Thailand mass shooting – At least 37 people are dead including at least 24 children after a gun and knife attack at a child care center in Thailand. The assailant was reportedly a former police officer who continued shooting from his car after leaving the center. He drove and reportedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life. His 2-year-old stepson was enrolled at the center he attacked Thursday but was not present while the attack was carried out, according to a local police chief. This is the deadliest rempage in Thailand’s history.
North and South Korea continue missile launches – Missiles are flying on the Korean peninsula for the third straight day after North Korea fired two more ballistic missiles on Thursday and flew 12 warplanes near the border with South Korea. The South sent 30 warplanes flying in response. Thursday’s activity comes two days after North Korea fired an intermediate-range missile over Japan. On Wednesday, South Korea conducted its own drills including one missile that misfired. Tensions continue to escalate among the two countries with the U.S. stuck in between as a strong South Korean ally.
Federal appeals court rules against DACA – A federal appeals court ordered a U.S. District Court to look at changes made by the Biden Administration to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Last year, the judge ruled the program was illegal. The appeals court agreed with the ruling that it is unlawful, but the 600,000 estimated migrants protected under DACA will remain while new applicants will not be allowed. The appeals court has sent the DACA case back to a lower court but the 46-page opinion signaled the judges were skeptical of DACA’s legality. President Joe Biden released a statement on the ruling Wednesday.
“Today’s decision is the result of continued efforts by Republican state officials to strip DACA recipients of the protections and work authorization that many have now held for over a decade,” Biden said. “And while we will use the tools we have to allow Dreamers to live and work in the only country they know as home, it is long past time for Congress to pass permanent protections for Dreamers, including a pathway to citizenship.”
