Full story

Today is Election Day for Georgia voters; airlines are warning of higher fares; and an Elon Musk company is under investigation. These stories and more highlight the morning update for Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022.

Election Day in Georgia Senate runoff

“We saw record voter turnout during the early vote period. But I don’t want you to underestimate our opposition,” Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, D, said Monday.

“We got to get in the game, get out to vote. And that’s the way your voice is going to be heard, is going to be heard if you get out and vote,” Senate Republican candidate Herschel Walker said.

Both Warnock and Walker urged voters to get to the polls on Election Day.

The runoff election will determine whether Democrats can extend their lead in the Senate.

There’s been record turnout in the days leading up to today, and Warnock has held a consistent slight lead.

The state has already started counting mail-in ballots as of 7 a.m. Polls close at 7 p.m.

Congress attempts compromise on immigration

Congress is looking to pass legislation on immigration before their lame duck session ends this month.

The proposal has been brought forward by both Democrats and Republicans in a bipartisan attempt to get what both parties want.

The bill will give citizenship to 2 million “Dreamers” and would provide and additional $25 billion for border security, and extend Title 42, which is set to end Dec. 21, ending mass expulsions at the border unless Congress intervenes.

New protections for Haitian migrants in U.S.

Immigrants in the U.S. who seek asylum from Haiti have been granted new protections from the Biden administration.

The new order allows about 110,000 Haitians to stay in the U.S. for at least 18 months, as the government in their home country is met with violent gangs attempting a take over. The gangs have cut off access to food and drinking water in some areas, creating catastrophic famine-like conditions.

The Biden administration is already predicting an even greater migration event from Haiti when more Haitians find a way to flee.

Airlines warn of higher fares to go green

The going green initiative has largely focused on transitioning our cars from gas to electric. But it’s not the only sector in transportation slowly moving toward lower emissions.

An association of all major airlines says its goal is to reach zero emissions by 2050In order to do that, they say airline fares for passengers will see an increase to cover the costs.

Musk’s Neuralink under investigation

“I think it’s important to show he likes doing the demo and isn’t strapped to a chair, our monkeys are pretty happy as you can see. A quick decision maker on the fruit front,” Neuralink co-founder Elon Musk said during a presentation last week.

Just days after his remarks on the advancements his company Neuralink has made, there are new reports of Neuralink being under federal investigation.

Musk faces allegations of animal welfare violations, after testing products and conducting research on animals such as monkeys, pigs, and sheep. According to the report, Musk is accused of rushing research, leading to botched experiments in the animals.

The company unveiled progress last week in its brain chips that are being tested in lab monkeys.

Biden visits Arizona, praises chip expansion

Later today, President Joe Biden will be in Phoenix, Arizona. The trip is in support of semiconductor chip production expanding in the U.S.

Chip manufacturer, TSMC, will announce today an increase to its chip investment to $40 billion.

It was exactly two months ago when IBM also announced a $20 billion investment in chip manufacturing in New York.

The moves will create a larger domestic supply of semiconductor chips, while also creating tens of thousands of jobs.
