The United Nations Human Rights Council voted to launch an investigation Thursday into the 11-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The probe will investigate any crimes including rights abuses committed during the conflict.
The vote was 24-9 with 14 abstentions.
Due to its observer status, the United States did not have a vote in the matter. However, the U.S. did respond, saying it deeply regretted the decision.
“The action today instead threatens to imperil the progress that has been made,” according to a statement issued by the U.S. to the U.N.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Palestinian delegation to the UN brought the vote to the council.
