A poll released Thursday, June 29, from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found GOP support for former President Donald Trump took a slight hit following the indictment over his handling of classified documents. The indictment made Trump the first former president to be indicted on federal criminal charges.

Thursday’s poll found 60% of Republicans now have a favorable view of Trump. That’s down from 68% back in April, before the classified documents indictment but just after he was indicted in New York for allegedly attempting to cover up hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.

June’s poll found 38% of Republicans have an unfavorable view of Trump. That’s an uptick from 30% in April. Overall, 63% of Americans said they have an unfavorable view of Trump.

In addition to overall GOP support for Trump, the poll looked at what Americans thought about the classified documents case itself post-indictment. Fifty-three percent of respondents said Trump broke the law, up from 47% in April.

“84% of Democrats think Trump broke the law regarding the classified documents, up from 75% who said the same in April,” the authors of the poll wrote in a summary Thursday. “23% of Republicans feel he did something illegal in the case, remaining stable from the 20% who felt that in April.”

The poll results suggest some Republicans could be growing weary of the legal drama Trump has faced over the past few years. In addition to the classified documents and hush money indictments, a prosecutor is investigating efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. In Washington, special counsel Jack Smith continues to investigate Trump’s role in the aftermath of the election, including the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
