Technology from some of the fastest cars on the Formula 1 racing circuit is being used in a new lineup of electric vehicles (EVs). The plan is all part of Honda’s $65 billion effort to break into the competitive EV market.
Historically, Honda has lagged behind in the production of electric models. However, the company’s forthcoming Zero Series aims to change that narrative.
Set to launch in 2026, this new line of EVs will feature innovations derived from Honda’s championship-winning Formula 1 vehicles. The lineup includes improvements that make the cars significantly lighter, shedding over 200 pounds compared to Honda’s previous EVs. This weight reduction is expected to enhance both the handling and range of the vehicles.
Electric vehicles typically weigh about 30% more than their gasoline-powered counterparts, raising concerns about road safety when collisions involving heavier EVs occur. By incorporating Formula 1 technology, Honda hopes to address these concerns, giving its new electric vehicles not only a smoother and more efficient ride, but also a safer one.
Honda plans to introduce seven new EV models across North America starting in 2026. Following the debut of the Zero Series, the company will release additional electric crossover and SUV models annually until 2030.
