Gun safe company Liberty Safe is changing multiple company policies following threats of a boycott. The company provided the Federal Bureau of Investigation with a customer’s gun safe passcode during a house raid.
The FBI found a safe during a raid of Arkansas man Nathan Hughes’ house. Hughes is charged in connection to the Jan. 6 insurrection.
The FBI contacted the company and was granted access, however, the warrant for the man’s home and property did not specifically name Liberty or require the company to provide access to the safe.
Hughes was not home at the time of the raid, and was arrested at a local business he owns in Fayetteville. After posting bond and being strapped with an ankle monitor, he returned home to find his gun safe open.
Liberty Safe is now facing backlash on social media, with some critics calling for a boycott.
Conservative commentator and Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk posted on X saying “Liberty Safe is an enemy to gun owners. They could have fought the warrant — like Apple did — instead they buckled and bent over. Boycott ridicule. Ruin their company.”
However, others are coming to Liberty Safe’s defense, including X owner Elon Musk.
“I think we’re going too far with these Jan 6th sentence lengths, especially given other crimes that aren’t being prosecuted at all, but Liberty Safe had no choice here and are not to blame,” Musk responded.
While the warrant itself would allow the company to refuse, it was company policy to grant the FBI access. This policy has now been changed
“We have revised our policies around cooperation with law enforcement,” Liberty said in a statement. “Going forward we will require a subpoena that legally compels Liberty safe to supply access codes but can only do so if these codes still exist in out system.”
Liberty Safe keeps access codes in a database in case customers forget their codes. Now, the company is allowing safe owners to expunge their codes from the system.
