A body believed to be Kentucky highway shooter Joseph Couch was discovered by YouTubers Fred and Sheila McCoy during a livestream search in Laurel County, Kentucky. Couch was suspected of a shooting spree on Sept. 7, where he allegedly opened fire on five motorists along Interstate 75, injuring all of them.
Authorities had been searching for Couch for over a week, combing through 28,000 acres of dense woods in the Daniel Boone National Forest, but came up empty.
The McCoys, self-proclaimed bounty hunters who run the “Hatfield McCoy Museum Adventures” YouTube channel, followed a trail of vultures circling overhead and a strong odor in the woods near Exit 49, where Couch had abandoned his vehicle after the attack.
While livestreaming their search, Fred McCoy called out to his wife after spotting the remains, believed to be Couch’s, lying in the brush. The couple immediately notified nearby officers, who quickly arrived on the scene. The remains were described as deteriorated, and the clothing on the body matched Couch’s description.
Couch’s body is being transferred to the medical examiner for formal identification and to determine the cause of death. The couple will receive $25,000 in reward money — $15,000 from the Laurel County Crimestoppers and an additional $10,000 from a private donor — for their discovery.
