Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Sunday that officials investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot could be jailed if the GOP regains control of Congress in the midterm election. His remarks have drawn reaction from many, including members of the committee.
“I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down, and the wolves are going to find out that they’re now sheep and they’re the ones who are in fact, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kinds of laws they’re breaking,” Gingrich said.
If Republicans win a majority in Congress this year, Gingrich said, “all these people who have been so tough and so mean and so nasty are going to be delivered subpoenas” for their communications.
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who serves as the vice-chair of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 violence, responded on Sunday.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), who also serves on the House select committee, also tweeted in response to Gingrich’s remarks. Kinzinger and Cheney are the only two GOP lawmakers serving on the congressional committee.
