Rare rain event floods the south, Mississippi bears brunt of downpour

The same storm system that swept across Dallas has now drenched Mississippi in a record rainfall event. In some areas, the downpour has amounted to three months of rain in one night according to the National Weather Service. Flooding has spread through the southern states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi as rain continues to push east.

Floods in Mississippi caused a nursing home to be evacuated on Wednesday where 42 residents were displaced. A highway in the area eroded and washed away in sweeping flood waters. Meteorologists said the type of rain event happening in Mississippi only occurs once every 200 to 500 years.

Water rescues are constantly underway as people see their homes, cars, and valuables, drenched by devastating floods. Before the rain, much of these areas were in an extreme drought, going from one weather extreme to another. The storm system is expected to cross Georgia but the amount of rainfall is expected to lessen.
