Full story

The Russian and Chinese militaries are cozying up, yet again, for another round of war games. The two communist countries kicked off the large-scale, weeklong event in Russia’s far east and the Sea of Japan.

The games come as both countries are trying to flex military might, but for different reasons.

Political analysts said China wants to show it can pressure the United States and its global interests.

While Russia wants to show its military is strong enough to show off in war games, while also invading a sovereign nation and committing what Moscow’s critics are calling “war crimes.”

China sent more than 2,000 troops along with hundreds of military vehicles, 21 combat aircraft and three warships to take part in Vostok 2022, which is Russian for “East 2022.”

In total, the Russian Defense Ministry said more than 50,000 troops and 5,000 weapons units will compete at seven firing ranges.

China and Russia also sent troops to Nicaragua this year for the “Sniper Frontier” war games, further proof of the growing military ties between the former adversaries.

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping developed strong personal ties while bolstering a strategic partnership. And while the idea was rejected in the past, Putin said the prospect of a military alliance between the countries can’t be ruled out.
