Former President Donald Trump said he would not run again in 2028 if he loses the election to Vice President Kamala Harris in November 2024. The Republican nominee made the announcement during a recent interview.
“If you’re not successful this time, do you see yourself running again in four years?” Trump was asked.
“No, I don’t. I think that will be it. I don’t see that at all. I think hopefully we’re going to be successful—” he replied, but his answer was cut off.
This exchange was the last question posed by Sharyl Attkisson during an interview on “Full Measure.” The interview garnered significant attention because it marks the first time Trump indicated this could be his final presidential run if he loses in 2024.
At 78 years old, Trump would be 82 if he were the Republican nominee in 2028. President Joe Biden, currently the oldest sitting president at 81, would be succeeded by Trump should he win in November. That would make Trump the oldest sitting president by the end of his term.
While Trump asserts he will not run again if this election does not go his way, this is not the first instance of him hinting at stepping away from politics following a loss. In 2020, Trump said, “You’ll never see me again” if he lost to Biden. Two years later, midway through Biden’s term, he announced his 2024 presidential campaign.
