The mystery surrounding the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions has taken a new turn. Nearly two years after the event, German authorities issued an arrest warrant Wednesday, Aug. 14, for a Ukrainian diving instructor identified as Volodymyr Z.
He is suspected of leading a sophisticated underwater attack on the pipelines in September 2022.
These pipelines are crucial for transporting Russian gas to Germany, but they were not active at the time. However, they still contained pressurized gas, leading to significant gas leaks near Denmark’s Bornholm Island.
Volodymyr is believed to have conducted the sabotage from a sailing yacht that traveled through Denmark and Sweden. Investigators discovered explosives on the yacht, directly connecting it to the sabotage.
The destruction of the pipelines escalated political tensions, with Russia accusing Western countries, all of whom have denied any involvement.
Polish officials confirmed they received the arrest warrant but it was too late — Volodymyr had already left Poland and headed to Ukraine. Poland said German authorities failed to put the suspect on the international database of wanted people.
A married couple, both Ukrainian diving instructors, have also been identified in Germany’s investigation into the sabotage. However, no arrest warrants have been issued for them yet, according to German news reports.
