Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday, Dec. 4, outside a New York City hotel, according to police and company officials. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. ET outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan, authorities confirmed.
Emergency responders transported the 50-year-old executive to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Thompson was shot in the chest and leg in what appeared to be a targeted attack, police said. The suspect fled the scene wearing a black face mask, and no arrests have been made. Investigators are actively searching for the gunman.
UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, was hosting its annual investor conference at the Hilton. The event was cut short following what company officials described as “a very serious medical situation” involving one of their team members.
The shooting occurred in a bustling part of Manhattan, just blocks from Rockefeller Center, where the annual tree lighting ceremony was scheduled to take place later in the day. The area was cordoned off during the morning commute as police investigated.
The New York Police Department has not released further details about the motive or any potential connections between Thompson and the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
