Elon Musk, a key figure in U.S. politics and a member of President-elect Donald Trump’s inner circle, is making waves in the United Kingdom. Through a series of posts on X, Musk has called for government intervention in the ongoing “grooming gangs” scandal. His remarks began Wednesday, Jan. 1, with a call for the release of conservative political activist Tommy Robinson from a U.K. prison.
Musk’s post on X, which said “Free Tommy Robinson!”, sparked a wider conversation, particularly within conservative circles in both the U.S. and the U.K. Some political leaders are now demanding government reform and federal investigations in the U.K. in response to Musk’s recent comments.
Robinson is one of Britain’s most prominent right-wing political activists. He is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence in the U.K. for defying a court order that prohibited him from repeating child abuse allegations he made against a Syrian refugee teenager in 2018. The refugee denied the abuse claims and successfully sued Robinson for libel.
Despite the court ruling, Robinson repeated the accusations in a banned documentary, which Musk later reposted. The documentary centered around Robinson’s claim of a “weaponized government.”
“This story is far bigger than Tommy Robinson. It’s about the weaponization and politicization of court buildings across the West,” Robinson said while discussing what he believes is a misuse of legal systems to silence critics.
Robinson has also created a documentary series about gang rapes involving young girls in England, which gained widespread attention after Musk’s posts.
“Why is Tommy Robinson in a solitary confinement prison for telling the truth? He should be freed, and those who covered up this travesty should take his place in that cell,” Musk posted on X.
Musk continued, “In the U.K., serious crimes such as rape require the Crown Prosecution Service’s approval for the police to charge suspects. Who was the head of the CPS when rape gangs were allowed to exploit young girls without facing justice? Keir Starmer, 2008 -2013.”
Musk’s posts have caught the attention of U.S. lawmakers. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, reposted a video by Robinson titled “The Rape of Britain – Episode One.”
In the video, Robinson says, “Our government, social services, and police force sacrificed a generation of our daughters.”
Lee wrote in his post, “The U.K. must free Tommy Robinson. If it doesn’t, there must be consequences.”
The leader of the Conservative Party in the U.K., Kemi Badenoch, has also called for a full national inquiry into the grooming gangs scandal.
“The time is long overdue for a full national inquiry into the rape gangs scandal,” Badenoch posted on X. “Trials have taken place all over the country in recent years, but no one in authority has connected the dots. 2025 must be the year that the victims start to get justice.”
In December, Musk met with the leader of Reform U.K., a conservative populist party, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. The party leader also criticized the “establishment” over the grooming gangs scandal. However, GB News reported that the British government formally rejected requests for further investigations into historic child abuse.
Currently, the U.K. is under the control of the left-wing Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer. Musk has traded jabs with Starmer online over various political issues. The tension continued when Starmer’s ally, Labour MP Jess Phillips, rejected further investigation into the grooming gangs issue.
Musk responded on X, “Who is the boss of Jess Phillips right now? Keir Starmer. The real reason she’s refusing to investigate the rape gangs is that it would obviously lead to the blaming of Keir Starmer (head of the CPS at the time).”
While Starmer has responded to Musk’s claims in the past, he has yet to address Musk’s latest post about him.
Musk’s involvement in conservative movements in both the U.S. and the U.K. follows his recent criticism of Germany’s left-wing party leaders in an op-ed supporting the country’s conservative party in the upcoming February elections.
