Full story

The world’s first museum dedicated entirely to AI-generated art is getting ready to open its doors. Dubbed Dataland, the gallery space is set to open in Los Angeles next year.

The developers say the museum aims to be more than a space for static displays. One of the cofounders, Refik Anadol, refers to artificial intelligence as a new kind of “pigment,” a tool used to bring data to life.

From weather patterns to city noise, Anadol has been turning real world information into art for years. His work has already made waves, with projects like “Unsupervised” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He says Dataland is just the next step in that journey.

The museum’s first major exhibit is already generating buzz. Developed in collaboration with the United Nations, the large nature model uses data from ecosystems like rainforests and glaciers to create a multimedia experience connecting viewers to the natural world.

While Dataland will explore the creative potential of AI, Anadol is also aware of the societal concerns surrounding the technology. After all, Los Angeles was at the center of last year’s writer strike, which centered on concerns about the role of AI in replacing human creators.

Anadol said, for him, AI is a tool for co-creation, not replacement.
