President Joe Biden commuted the life sentence of Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier, who was convicted in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents. Peltier, now 80, has maintained his innocence and faced health issues during his nearly 50 years in prison.
Biden’s decision came after increasing pressure from tribal leaders and lawmakers advocating for Peltier’s release.
Peltier is expected to transition to home confinement in South Dakota, where supporters have prepared a house for him.
