Priorities USA, a top Democratic super PAC, is gathering digital activists in Washington, D.C., to evaluate its campaign efforts and strategize ways to oppose the Republican agenda. The meeting will conclude with a happy hour co-hosted by Google, sparking fresh debate over Big Tech’s political involvement.
The event, dubbed the 2024 Digital Retrospective, aims to analyze the organization’s digital mobilization efforts following Vice President Kamala Harris’ election loss.
According to an invitation obtained by the Washington Free Beacon, the summit will discuss lessons learned from the campaign and prepare for deeper planning sessions in the coming months.
Priorities USA’s major donors include billionaire financier George Soros and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The group spent $75 million on digital mobilization during the 2024 election cycle.
In the invitation, the super PAC quoted Harris’s concession speech.
“This is not a time to throw up our hands. This is a time to roll up our sleeves,” the invitation said.
Google confirmed its role in hosting the post-meeting happy hour but distanced itself from the political discussions. A Google spokesperson said its political sales team regularly hosts events for advertisers on both sides of the aisle.
The involvement of Big Tech in political events has drawn attention amid growing scrutiny. President-elect Donald Trump has long accused Google of bias, claiming it manipulates search results to disadvantage him.
On the campaign trail, Trump pledged to address these concerns but ruled out breaking up the company, citing its importance in countering China.
Adding to the tension, Trump nominated former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., to become his attorney general. Gaetz is a vocal supporter of antitrust legislation targeting Big Tech. He previously praised the Biden administration’s efforts to hold Google accountable.
The event highlights the intersection of corporate influence and political strategy as tech companies face mounting criticism from both sides of the aisle.
Trump to overhaul Biden’s proposed AI policy, promote private sector
The future of artificial intelligence policy in the United States is at a crossroads. President Joe Biden has prioritized safety, transparency and regulation, while President-elect Donald Trump plans to take a more deregulated, innovation-driven approach.
Biden’s executive order on AI safety, announced earlier this year, aims to ensure rigorous oversight of AI systems. The plan includes safety testing for critical sectors such as energy and transportation, strict privacy protections and mandates for transparency to prevent biases and discrimination.
The administration argues that these safeguards are essential to protecting the public and minimizing risks from the rapidly advancing technology.

Trump, however, announced plans to repeal Biden’s executive order and implement a contrasting strategy that prioritizes economic growth and innovation. His administration intends to designate AI hubs across the country, offering tax breaks and incentives to tech companies, and plans to scale up nuclear energy and cloud infrastructure to power advanced AI systems.
He also intends to reduce regulations, arguing that Biden’s framework stifles American companies in the global AI race. Critics of Trump’s plan warn that deregulation could lead to dangerous flaws in AI systems, exacerbate bias or leave the technology vulnerable to misuse.
Proponents argue that fewer restrictions will enable U.S. companies to compete more effectively against China, which has made massive investments in AI technology.
With Trump’s policy details expected in late 2025, the debate over regulation versus innovation is already drawing sharp divides in Washington, D.C. Both approaches have significant implications for the future of AI development, the economy and national security.
Google responds to report Gemini sent menacing message for man to ‘die’
Google responded to accusations on Thursday, Nov. 14, that its AI chatbot Gemini told a University of Michigan graduate student to “die” while he asked for help with his homework. Google asserts Gemini has safeguards to prevent the chatbot from responding with sexual, violent or dangerous wording encouraging self-harm.
“Large language models can sometimes respond with nonsensical responses, and this is an example of that,” Google said in a statement to CBS News. “This response violated our policies and we’ve taken action to prevent similar outputs from occurring.”
The graduate student and his sister, who was alongside him during the response from the chatbot, said that the threatening message came during a “back-and-forth” conversation. The two claimed they were seeking advice on the challenges older adults face and solutions to those challenges.
There is no explicit mention of the exact prompt that spurred the threatening response. However, the pair said they were startled by what they read from the Gemini chatbot.
“This is for you, human,” The message from Gemini shared with CBS News read. “You and only you. You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and resources. You are a burden on society. You are a drain on earth. You are a blight on the landscape. You are a stain on the universe. Please die. Please.”
“I hadn’t felt panic like that in a long time to be honest,” the man’s sister said.
The pair warn someone considering self-harm could be susceptible to such threatening messages as Google acknowledges it is taking corrective action.
As Straight Arrow News reported, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was tricked into giving advice on how to get away with international crimes and how to make a bomb in the past.
Oura CEO Tom Hale believes Apple won’t be entering the smart ring game. He told CNBC Tuesday, Nov. 12 at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, that Apple will look to grow in the wearable tech market by focusing on its watch lineup.
“I think they are unconvinced about the value of having a ring and a watch together and they’re not interested in undercutting the Apple Watch as a business,” Hale said.
“I think they’re probably keeping a close eye on Samsung and a close eye on us, but it’s hard to do this product category right,” Hale continued.
Oura and Samsung are the two big players when it comes to smart rings. Oura, which has been developing its smart rings since 2013, recently launched its latest version, Oura Ring 4.
In an interview with CNBC last month, Hale said Oura is distinguishing itself from other tech brands because it sees itself as more of a health company.
“A smart ring is a great wearable because it’s comfortable, it’s small, you can wear it at night and not feel it. You barely notice you have it on. Plus, it looks like jewelry, so it fits into whatever wardrobe you have on,” Hale said. “But it’s more than just a sleep tracker, it’s a full complete solution for preventive health and across whether it’s sleep, heart health, women’s health, stress, resilience, all these factors, the device is tracking your health and giving you the feedback to make healthy choices along the way.”
Oura received some major competition earlier this year when Samsung debuted its Galaxy Ring. While anyone can wear one, reviewers say it’d be “smart” to have other Samsung products to accompany your Galaxy Ring.
The Verge recently reviewed the ring.
“There’s no point in beating around the bush,” The Verge said in its review. “The Galaxy Ring is made with Samsung users in mind…its full potential requires other Samsung products. You’ll have an easier, more accurate health tracking experience when you use it with a Galaxy Watch…In other words, it’s less of a Galaxy Watch alternative, it’s an accessory for it.”
One other big component to compare between the two is the price. The Galaxy Ring costs $399, while the Oura Ring 4 starts at $349. Both brands are top names in a growing tech segment. Global Market Insights said smart rings brought in $210 million in 2023.
As for Apple, some contradicting reports came to light in October 2024. First, Bloomberg’s Matt Gurman said Apple isn’t actively developing a smart ring and has no plans to launch one. But a post on a Korean blogging site picked up by multiple websites alerted that Apple is working on one.
Adding to that speculation, market researcher CCS Insight, in its annual predictions report, said Apple could launch a smart ring by 2026.

Microsoft accuses Google of ‘shadow campaigns’ to influence EU regulators
Microsoft publicly accused rival tech company Google of running “shadow campaigns” to discredit the competition to EU regulators. The accusations include funding a fake grassroots campaign to “mislead the public.”
“I’ve taken pains to tell the truth, even when that might make things more complicated for Microsoft,” Microsoft’s Deputy General Counsel Rima Alaily wrote in a blog post. “It’s not comfortable or natural for me to pen something critical of someone else, but in this case, I think it’s important because it concerns me when someone attacks us and, I believe, does so dishonestly.”
Microsoft claims Google hired an advisory firm to set up “an astroturf group” called the Open Cloud Coalition that is set to launch this week. A flyer linked in Microsoft’s blog post says it is a group of cloud platforms “being formed to advocate for a fair, competitive and open cloud services industry across the UK and EU.”
“It is designed to discredit Microsoft with competition authorities, and policymakers and mislead the public,” Alaily wrote. “Google has gone through great lengths to obfuscate its involvement, funding, and control, most notably by recruiting a handful of European cloud providers, to serve as the public face of the new organization.”
Alaily says Microsoft found out about the scheme from a company that chose not to join the Open Cloud Coalition.
“One of the companies approached, who ultimately declined, told us that the organization will be directed and largely funded by Google for the purpose of attacking Microsoft’s cloud computing business in the European Union and the United Kingdom,” Alaily said.
Google ranks third globally in the cloud market behind Amazon and Microsoft and has made multiple attempts to paint Microsoft as anti-competitive in the space.
“We’ve been very public about our concerns with Microsoft’s cloud licensing,” a Google Cloud spokesperson told Straight Arrow News in an email. “We and many others believe that Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices lock-in customers and create negative downstream effects that impact cybersecurity, innovation, and choice. You can read more in our many blog posts on these issues.”
“We’ve been speaking to many business and public sector organizations,” Google Cloud’s Head of Platforms Amit Zavery said in September. “What we’re seeing is a lot of restrictions Microsoft has created using their dominance in the on-premises software and not letting customers have a choice of moving that workload to any cloud provider of their choice.”
It’s not the first time Microsoft has faced criticism for bundling items and forcing users to adopt their products. The landmark antitrust case against Microsoft in the 1990s ruled Microsoft acted like a monopoly by restricting the ability to remove Internet Explorer and use other programs to surf the web. Microsoft avoided getting broken up on appeal and settled the case in 2001.
Saudi Arabia constructing largest tower in world, size of 20 Empire State Buildings
Saudi Arabia has started construction on the Mukaab, expected to become the world’s largest building, situated in the center of Riyadh. The Mukaab, a colossal 1,300-foot-tall and 1,200-foot-wide cube, is designed to house the equivalent of 20 Empire State Buildings inside.
This $50 billion project is part of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s “Saudi Vision 2030” initiative, aiming to bring futuristic architecture to Saudi Arabia.
More than just a building, the Mukaab is envisioned as a “city-in-a-box,” offering fine dining, luxury retail, office spaces and enough residential areas for over 100,000 people.
Plans also include 9,000 hotel rooms and green spaces accessible within 15 minutes from any point inside the structure.
The Mukaab is set to feature immersive experiences powered by artificial intelligence, including holographic projections, virtual reality displays on exterior walls and interactive scenes designed to transport visitors to different times and places.
The structure’s design incorporates elements of local Najdi architecture, with a cube shape that some have compared to the Kaaba in Mecca.
While supporters view the design as a tribute to cultural heritage, some critics have raised concerns over this resemblance.
Human rights groups have also voiced worries about potential displacement of local communities and the possible exploitation of migrant labor. Past projects like the Neom development faced similar criticisms, with reports of forced evictions.
Despite the concerns, the Mukaab is projected to add $51 billion to Saudi Arabia’s non-oil GDP and create over 300,000 jobs.
Construction is scheduled for completion by 2030 and ambitious megaprojects, such as the Line, leave many curious about how these new attractions may redefine Saudi Arabia’s future.
US Treasury’s AI tools recover $1 billion in fraudulent payments
The U.S. Treasury Department has ramped up efforts to combat fraudulent payments by deploying artificial intelligence to detect suspicious transactions. This new approach has led to the prevention and recovery of over $4 billion in fraudulent payments during fiscal year 2024, a significant increase from the previous year.
The Treasury’s Office of Payment Integrity reported that $1 billion of the recovered funds were directly attributed to the AI-based system implemented at the start of the 2023 fiscal year. Last year, the department recovered just over $652 million, showcasing a six-fold improvement in fraud detection efficiency.
Officials cited an increase in fraudulent activity since the pandemic as the main reason for adopting AI tools, which have been instrumental in identifying and stopping high-risk transactions.
In addition to detecting fraud, the AI system also enhanced payment scheduling processes, resulting in an additional recovery of $180 million. Treasury officials emphasized the department’s commitment to protecting taxpayer money and preventing improper payments. Officials also noted that, while AI is used to combat fraud, it is often leveraged by fraudsters as well, leading to an ongoing battle to stay ahead of sophisticated schemes.
In partnership with law enforcement, the Treasury’s efforts have led to multiple arrests and active investigations. The department plans to continue expanding its use of AI tools to safeguard taxpayer funds, particularly as online payment fraud is projected to exceed $362 billion by 2028.
Why Hurricane Milton holds an added danger for EV owners in Florida
Fire officials in Florida sent a warning on Monday, Oct. 7, that electric vehicles (EVs) could be “ticking time bombs” in the wake of Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The problem stems from saltwater brought in with the storm surges, and while the issue is rare, the risk is real.
Saltwater is reportedly more corrosive than fresh water and can eat away at the batteries. That causes cells to short-circuit, generate heat and potentially burst into flames.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, officials said that 11 of the lithium-ion battery fires seen after that storm involved EVs.
Fire officials continued to urge anyone with any products that run on lithium-ion batteries to move them away from structures and make sure they’re unplugged.
If people are not able to get their cars out of the danger zone in time, experts cautioned anyone against trying to drive an EV afterwards, noting that fires can start days or weeks after flooding.
Instead, industry experts advised individuals to get in touch with their car’s manufacturer and let them know that the vehicle has been submerged in saltwater.
Firefighters also said that if a person’s car is in the storm surge zone, and they do not plan to travel, to keep the battery at 30% or less. Firefighters noted that batteries with less of a charge are less likely to start a fire.
AI companionship could be worth hundreds of billions by 2030
As artificial intelligence creeps into everyday lives, artificial girlfriends and boyfriends could become a multibillion dollar business by the end of the decade. AI chatbot companions promise to provide support for lonely or isolated individuals with engaging conversations, accessibility, entertainment, connection and even romantic and intimate companionship.
“Replika” is one of the more popular bots and for $19.99 a month, or a special deal of $70 a year, it allows a “space where you can safely share your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, experiences, memories, dreams—your ‘private perceptual world.’”
According to Replika’s website, the chatbot companion just wants to be your friend.
“It’s like the only interaction you can have that isn’t judging you,” Phil Libin, founder of Evernote, said. “It’s a unique experience in the history of the universe and it’s not often you get to have those.”
Ark Investment Management Company estimates that “AI companionship could scale five-fold by the end of the decade, from $30 million in annualized revenue globally today to $70-$150 billion.”
According to Esquire, that would mean 2 billion users would be paying $70 or more a year for an AI companion. Is that possible?
In April, tech executive Greg Isenberg, CEO of Late Checkout, wrote on X that he had met a man in Miami who admitted to spending $10,000 a month on AI girlfriends.
“Some people play video games, I play with AI girlfriends,” the man told Isenberg.
“I thought he was kidding. But, he’s a 24-year-old single guy who loves it,” Isenberg wrote.
According to Therapy Brands, AI companions can have some benefits, such as providing emotional support and companionship during moments of solitude.
However, there are limitations, including two key issues.
“The first is that feeling of being loved unconditionally can lead to dependence on AI companions,” Therapy Brands’ website said.
The second issue is that the AI chatbot “may struggle to understand certain situations, sometimes even exacerbating them.”
Therapy Brands advises people to control how often they’re interacting with their AI companion and prioritize real-life human connections.
The proposed California law would have required safety testing of large AI systems. It would have also given the state’s attorney general power to sue companies over serious harm caused by their tech, and it would have required a sort of “kill switch” that would turn off AI models in case of emergency.
“I do not believe this is the best approach to protecting the public from real threats posed by the technology,” Newsom said in a statement explaining his opposition. “Instead, the bill applies stringent standards to even the most basic functions — so long as a large system deploys it.”

For instance, minimal risk systems like OpenAI’s Chat GPT would only need to adhere to transparency provisions and EU copyright laws. But higher risk systems, like AI models that try to predict whether a person might commit a crime, will be fully banned as of February 2025.
These algorithms are becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives, and I do think it’s time to regulate them.

Simone Del Rosario: Patrick, what was it in this bill that the governor of California sent back and how would it have changed the AI landscape in the state?
Patrick Hall: I think that there are a lot of good things on the table for this California bill, in particular, mandatory testing before systems were released; the ability for the government to take enforcement actions when harms do occur related to AI systems; the notion of a kill switch or the ability to turn a system off quickly; whistleblower protections. There were good things there.
I think that the issue was that the focus of the law was on so-called frontier models. And these are sort of the largest AI models developed by the largest AI companies. It’s a very narrow scope. And then also it really only focused on a sort of small aspect of the performance of AI systems that has come to be known, sort of confusingly, as AI safety.
AI safety really concentrates on things like preventing systems from being used to make bioweapons, preventing catastrophic risk, and I think that was where the bill went wrong.
AI can be a dangerous technology, but I think that it’s very clear that the harms of AI today are toward consumers and toward our democratic institutions, not sort of pie-in-the-sky sci-fi fantasies about computers making super viruses. So I think that’s where the bill went wrong: its focus on catastrophic risk.
Simone Del Rosario: Do you agree with the tech companies that said this bill would have stifled innovation because of the things that you would have to do before developing or is that just an excuse that they make?
Patrick Hall: My opinion there is that it is an excuse, but it would certainly have cut into their revenues in terms of these AI systems, which are probably already under a great deal of stress. I try to explain to people that these generative AI systems require industrial-scale investments in computation, tens [to] hundreds of millions of dollars or more. So they’ve already spent a lot of money on these systems. Whenever you have a sort of regulatory burden, that, of course, increases the amount of money that you have to spend. But since we talking about the biggest, richest companies in the world, I do think it’s a little bit of an excuse.
Simone Del Rosario: I am curious: had this bill passed, or if California decides to move forward with different but similar legislation regulating AI when the rest of the country hasn’t, could this change how tech companies operate in the state of California?
Patrick Hall: Certainly you could see tech companies leave the state of California. I’m not sure how realistic that is, though. What tends to happen is almost a different scenario where most of the larger firms would apply the California regulation, or any large state regulation – California, New York, Illinois, Texas – apply the obligations to meet that regulation across the entire United States.
I’d say that’s actually a more likely outcome and perhaps another reason why some of the tech firms did not like this bill is because they knew it would not only affect their behavior and their revenues in California, but it was likely to affect their behavior and revenues throughout the country.
Simone Del Rosario: Let’s extrapolate that out even more because the EU has passed AI regulation, the AI Act, over there. These are multinational companies that have to adhere to rules in the EU. So how does that affect business in America? And how is the proposed regulation in California different from what we see in the EU?
Patrick Hall: One thing that I would like to emphasize is that EU citizens and citizens of other countries with strong data privacy laws or AI regulations really have a different experience online than Americans and and have many more protections from predatory behaviors by tech companies than we as Americans do.
What it boils down to is tech companies are able to extract a lot more data and sort of conduct a lot more experiments on Americans than they are able to on EU citizens and citizens of other countries in the world that have strong data privacy or AI regulations.
I think it’s a fully different online experience in Europe these days than it is in the U.S. The EU AI Act is a fairly different kind of law. It’s a much broader law and it’s a law that doesn’t focus only on so-called frontier models or only on large models. It doesn’t focus only on safety. It focuses on all types of uses of AI, and it has several different risk tiers, where models in different risk tiers or systems in different risk tiers have different compliance burdens. So it’s a much more holistic law.
Simone Del Rosario: Do we need to have an AI act of our own for a federal response to this?
Patrick Hall: It’s a very good question. I think the answer is yes, eventually. AI in 2024 is very data-driven, so it’s very hard to have good AI regulation without good data privacy regulation. The EU is quite far ahead of us in that they have a strong, overarching data privacy regulation, the GDPR, and after they passed that, they were able to pass an AI Act.
Now it doesn’t have to be done in that order. I’m not saying that the Europeans have done everything right. I’m not saying that they won’t stifle innovation. Certainly, they will to a certain degree, but we have a lot of catching up to do as well. We need to start thinking about data privacy and broader regulation of AI, certainly, and those two may have to be done together. It’s just hard to do AI regulation without data privacy regulation because 2024 AI is so data driven.
We as voters need to make it clear to our representatives that these types of regulations are important, and we need to make it clear the harms we’re experiencing, anything from privacy violations to inconveniences to more serious outcomes, more serious negative outcomes.
These algorithms are becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives and I do think it’s time to regulate them. And I’d also make it clear that we have good models for regulating algorithms on the books in consumer finance and employment decision-making, in medical devices, and any of these would be a better model to start out from then than the sort of, quote-unquote, AI safety direction.
