UN resuming Haiti aid flights nearly a week after 3 planes hit by gunfire
The United Nations announced on Monday, Nov. 18, it will resume aid flights to Hait on Wednesday, Nov. 20. This comes about a week after three commercial planes were hit by gang gunfire that led to a pause in commercial flights to the island nation.
As Straight Arrow News reported last week, the United States announced a pause to all flights into Haiti for at least 30 days after bullets hit three commercial flights.
Armed gangs also reportedly opened fire on a U.N. helicopter and U.S. Embassy truck in Haiti last month.
Despite certain flights resuming, most parts of Port-au-Prince remain under gang control, as criminal organizations gain ground in the capital.
The rising violence has dealt a blow to a U.N.-backed international mission to reestablish control of the capital and ease delays of U.N. aid.
The agency says only 20% of the capital is accessible to aid workers and estimated on Sunday, Nov. 17, that more than 20,000 Haitians were displaced over four days. Half of the 20,000 displaced were children and many now face disease and hunger.
The U.N. warns that without more international support “the suffering will worsen exponentially” for Haitians.
Satirical paper The Onion wins bid to take over Alex Jones’ Infowars
The satirical news outlet The Onion has won the bankruptcy auction for Alex Jones’ Infowars media company. Infowars, which has hosted controversial content, including Jones’ claims that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax, was sold after a defamation lawsuit led to a $1.5 billion judgment against Jones.
The Onion’s winning bid puts it in control of the future of Infowars. The deal was financially supported in part by the families of Sandy Hook victims, which made the acquisition possible.
Jones was forced to sell the company as part of a court ruling in June that found him liable for defamation and emotional distress due to his false claims about the Sandy Hook shooting.
Following the judgment, Jones filed for bankruptcy, and a judge ordered him to sell his assets, including everything under the Infowars brand, to help pay the damages owed to the victims’ families.
After news of the sale broke, Jones expressed his frustration on X and promised to pursue all legal avenues to challenge the deal.
“The Connecticut Democrats with The Onion newspaper bought us,” Jones said. “They changed all the betting rules, made it secret a few days ago. I had a bad feeling. I told you that.”
The sale price for Infowars hasn’t been disclosed. As part of the deal, The Onion will acquire not only the Infowars website, trademarks, and video archive, but also its social media accounts, Austin-based studio, equipment and mailing list.
“We were told this outcome would be nearly impossible, but we are no strangers to impossible fights,” Robbie Parker, a Sandy Hook parent, said. “The world needs to see that having a platform does not mean you are above accountability. The dissolution of Alex Jones’ assets and the death of Infowars is the justice we have long awaited and fought for.”
The sale marks the end of Jones’ 25-year reign over Infowars. With The Onion now in control, the future of the platform, once a major voice in the conservative ecosystem, is uncertain.
However, The Onion has already secured its main advertiser, Everytown for Gun Safety. The Onion said it will use Infowars’ channels to raise awareness about gun violence prevention.
FAA bans all US flights to Haiti after 2 commercial jets hit by gunfire
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a ban on all U.S. flights to Haiti for at least 30 days on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The announcement follows two U.S. commercial airline jets being hit by gunfire on Monday, Nov. 11, from gangs in Port-au-Prince.
In separate incidents, a Spirit Airlines jet and JetBlue flight were struck by bullets at Haiti’s international airport in Port-au-Prince. Both of the flights were diverted, and no passengers were hurt in the incidents. However, a flight attendant did reportedly suffer minor injuries on the Spirit Airlines flight.
In the wake of the violence, JetBlue canceled all flights to Haiti on Monday until Dec. 2, and Spirit Airlines announced it was suspending flights to Haiti pending an “evaluation” of the incident.
Spirit did arrange a return flight to the United States for the crew after the plane landed safely in the Dominican Republic.
Tuesday’s FAA order applies to all operators of aircrafts registered in the United States except when the operator of the flight is a foreign air carrier. Exceptions will only be made for emergencies and flights permitted by the U.S. government or agency and approved by the FAA.
With ongoing gang violence in Haiti, the U.S. State Department has rated the country as a level four “do not travel” destination, calling the security situation in the Haiti “unpredictable and dangerous.”
Spirit Airlines flight shot at by gangs as it attempts to land in Haiti
Haiti’s international airport temporarily shut down on Monday, Nov. 11, as gangs reportedly started shooting at a Spirit Airlines flight in Port-au-Prince. A flight attendant sustained minor injuries in the incident. The violence unfolded as official swore in a new prime minister.
The bullets hit the plane as the crew attempted to make a landing in Haiti’s capital before redirecting to the Dominican Republic, where it safely touched down.
Spirit told the BBC it has halted further flights to Haiti “pending further evaluation.”
United States officials believe gangs targeted the plane to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince. In other parts of Haiti, gun battles continue to break out between gangs and police.
Gang members also set fire to homes in some neighborhoods and schools closed as fears of more violence grew.
DOJ indicts 48 suspected members of Sinaloa cartel after series of drugs raids
Federal authorities have seized tens of millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine in raids across California, Arizona and Nevada. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday, Nov. 7, that it has charged 48 suspected members of the Sinaloa cartel with distributing meth, fentanyl, heroin and cocaine.
Authorities say that they found more than 8,000 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value reportedly around $72 million, in addition to firearms.
The DOJ says nearly 150 federal, state and local law enforcement officials arrested 25 suspects and performed 15 search warrants in Imperial County, California, Yuma, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Law enforcement officials say that 23 of the suspects connected to the crimes are still on the loose.
Charges in the DOJ indictments include drug trafficking, conspiracy and bulk cash smuggling. If convicted, the charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life behind bars, in addition to a $10 million fine.
U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath said in a statement that the arrests and seizure of drugs is an extreme blow to a major drug-trafficking network.
The Sinaloa cartel is one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organizations and has long-controlled drug routes into the United States.
The branch of the Sinaloa cartel charged in the indictment is linked to a drug lord known as “El Mayo,” who is currently being held in New York, which operates out of Imperial Valley and Mexicali, Mexico.
President-elect Trump building his team as meeting with Biden nears
President-elect Trump is already filling positions in his administration as he prepares for a White House meeting with President Biden. And the search continues for more than a dozen monkeys that escaped from a South Carolina research facility last week. These stories and more highlight your Unbiased Updates for Monday, Nov. 11, 2024.
President-elect Trump building his team as meeting with Biden nears
President-elect Donald Trump continues to work to fill appointments in his administration as President Joe Biden looks to engage in a peaceful transfer of power. It was announced over the weekend Biden and Trump will meet at the White House later this week.
Trump has spoken to numerous world leaders since election night. A source told Reuters the president-elect recently had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Reuters has since reported the Kremlin denies. The source said Trump told Putin to not escalate the war with Ukraine.
It was not clear if that was the first time the president-elect golfed at his club since an assassination attempt on his life in September.
Russia, Ukraine launch record numbers of drones in overnight attacks
As President-elect Trump reportedly spoke with both Russia and Ukraine’s president, the war between the two countries rages on. A record number of drone strikes were launched over the weekend.
Ukraine launched its largest attack on Moscow since the start of the war, striking Russia’s capital late Saturday night, Nov. 9, into early Sunday, Nov. 10. Russia said a total of 34 drones were launched in Moscow’s direction, but all of them were shot down.

That attack came after Ukraine said Russia launched a total of 145 drones Saturday night, the most ever in a single night-time attack during the war. Ukraine said its defenses shot down more than 60 of the drones, while others left Ukrainian airspace.
Israeli strikes kill dozens in Lebanon and northern Gaza
Lebanon’s health ministry said the offensive there left at least 23 people dead, including seven children, in a village north of Beirut away from areas of the country where the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has a major presence. Israel did not issue an evacuation warning before the strike.
Israel’s military said the strike hit a Hezbollah site used to store weapons and the strike is under review.
The strike in northern Gaza was on a home that was sheltering displaced people, according to a hospital official in the territory. At least 17 were killed. The Israeli military said it targeted a site where militants were operating.
The strikes came less than 24 hours hours after Qatar announced it suspended its role as mediator for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza because neither side is willing to come to an agreement.

They said Myrick was found leaving the scene of the shooting, which occurred during a homecoming week celebration at the school. Investigators said he was found with a handgun with a machine gun conversion device.
25 of 43 escaped monkeys in South Carolina recovered
More than half the monkeys that escaped a South Carolina research facility have been caught.
Last Wednesday, Nov. 6, 43 rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from Alpha Genesis, a medical lab that uses the animals for clinical drug trials, in Yemassee. That’s about 60 miles west of Charleston.

Officials said the remaining monkeys do not seem to have gone far. They say a “significant number” of them are still near the facility eating food left out for them and interacting with other monkeys still inside the facility. Trappers have not yet been able to corral them.
Biden, Harris to appear together for first time since election for Veterans Day ceremony
The White House said the two will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The president will then deliver remarks at the cemetery’s amphitheater.
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will also be in attendance.
Last week, President Biden issued a proclamation for Veterans Day, saying in part, “Each one of our nation’s veterans is a link in a chain of honor that stretches back to our founding days — bound by a sacred oath to support and defend the United States of America. Throughout history, whenever and wherever the forces of darkness have sought to extinguish the flame of freedom, America’s veterans have been fighting to keep it burning bright.”
How Mexico’s policy toward cartels is changing amid growing violence
As cartel violence grows in Mexico, the country’s president may be rethinking the continuation of her predecessor’s policy dubbed “Hugs, not bullets.” President Claudia Sheinbaum has worked hard to avoid using the term “Hugs, not bullets,” as she appears to shift her strategy in combatting drug cartels.
The “hugs” she claims are for impoverished young people and to keep them from being recruited by cartels.
“Clearly, it isn’t a question of hugs for criminals, nobody ever said that,” Sheinbaum said.
A rash of recent shootouts between the Mexican military and drug cartels suggest Sheinbaum may be abandoning the no bullets approach. Gun battles between Mexican security forces have reportedly killed suspected cartel members. They’ve also led to the deaths of bystanders caught in the crossfire.
The deaths have led to questions over the use of Mexican soldiers, who reportedly shoot rather than investigate.
The change in approach by Sheinbaum comes as gang violence continue to rise in Mexico.
Police in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero reportedly found 11 bodies, including two minors, on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The bodies were dumped along the highway, in what police are investigating as homicides.
The bodies were discovered in the same state where a Mexican mayor was reportedly beheaded by cartel members weeks ago.
With six days until the election, former President Donald Trump stumped in Allentown, Pennsylvania as Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her “closing argument.” We have what each said about what’s at stake next Tuesday. Also, details on what happened after a gunman opened fire from a hotel in Atlanta. These stories and more highlight your Unbiased Updates for Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024.
Harris gives closing argument as Trump addresses Biden’s comments
Some twists on the campaign trail with under a week to go now to Election Day and already more than 50 million ballots cast. Both presidential candidates gave dueling speeches Tuesday night, Oct. 29.
The Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris delivered what she described as her “closing argument” to the American people near the White House as the Republican nominee former President Donald Trump looked to court Latino voters in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.
During her address at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., the vice president emphasized its significance as the same site where former President Trump spoke to his supporters right before the riots on the capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
“So tonight, I will speak to everyone about the choice and stakes in this election,” she said. “Look, we know who Donald Trump is. He is the person who stood at this very spot nearly four years ago and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election.”
The vice president also told voters she will seek common ground, saying she will give those who disagree with her a “seat at the table.”
“As Americans, we rise and fall together,” she said. “America, for too long, we have been consumed with too much division, chaos and mutual distrust. And it can be easy then to forget a simple truth: it doesn’t have to be this way. It doesn’t have to be this way. We have to stop pointing fingers and start locking arms.”
In Pennsylvania, former President Trump reached out to voters during a rally in the majority Hispanic town of Allentown.
“I’m here today with a message of hope for all Americans,” he said. “With your vote this election — oh, do I look forward to this election. We — I’m going to say ‘we’ because we are going to do it as a group. We will end inflation. Wwe will stop the invasion of criminals into our country. And we will bring back the American dream. We’re doing it together, Pennsylvania.”
During his rally, the former president asked his supporters to vote and send in their mail-in ballots early, saying “they’ve already cheated” in the state — a reference to law enforcement in Lancaster County announcing they were investigating around 2,500 voter registration forms for alleged fraud.
Trump turned his attention to President Joe Biden after Florida Sen. Marco Rubio joined him on stage.
“I wasn’t going to say anything, but I have breaking news for you Mr. President,” Rubio told Trump. “You may not have heard this: just moments ago, Joe Biden stated that our supporters are garbage, are garbage. He’s talking about the border patrol, he’s talking about nurses, he’s talking about teachers, he’s talking about everyday Americans who love their country and want to dream big again and support you Mr. President.”
“Remember Hillary [Clinton], she said ‘deplorable’ and then she said ‘irredeemable,’ right?” Trump responded. “But she said ‘deplorable.’ That didn’t work out. Garbage, I think, is worse right?”
What they were referring to were comments made by President Biden during a Voto Latino campaign call Tuesday night. Biden spoke about the comedian who made controversial jokes about Puerto Rico during Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally over the weekend.
“Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage,’” the president said. “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”
The White House issued a statement saying, “The president referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as ‘garbage.’” President Biden himself followed up on his comments with a post on X saying, “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage…the comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
During an appearance on Fox News Tuesday night, Trump told host Sean Hannity nobody from his campaign vetted the comedian before the MSG rally.
As it pertains to the alleged voter fraud in Pennsylvania, Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro told CNN there will be safe elections in the state and when asked about Biden’s “garbage” comment, Shapiro said, “It’s certainly not the words I would choose.”
Supreme Court rules RFK Jr. will remain on ballot in 2 swing states
It was unlikely the Supreme Court would have ruled in his favor, because voting is already underway in both states. Kennedy’s name also remains on the ballot in some other states, but he did not ask the Supreme Court to take it off anywhere but Wisconsin and Michigan in an apparent move to secure more voters for his ally Trump.
Steve Bannon spends first day out of prison stumping for Trump
Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon wasted no time showing his support for the former president after being released from prison early Tuesday morning. Bannon just finished serving a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from Congress during its investigation into the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
Bannon’s first order of business was to resume his podcast “WarRoom.” He then held a news conference urging Republicans to turn out in droves to vote for Trump on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
“I’ve been empowered by my four months at Danbury Federal Prison,” Bannon said during the news conference.
He added, “Obviously with seven days or six days left, you have to have a convergence of the get out the vote effort. I am not a huge believer in our ability to actually participate in rallies or do rallies because right now I think President Trump does great and he has people long there are going to do rallies in the different states. Our focus is one thing to make sure that we get as many American citizens, either early voting when they can or to the polls next Tuesday.”
He has pleaded not guilty to money laundering, conspiracy, fraud and other charges. His trial in that case is scheduled to begin in December.
Paul Pelosi attacker sentenced to life term on state charges
A judge sentenced the man who broke into former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s northern California home and attacked her husband, Paul, with a hammer to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
David DePape, 44, was already serving 30 years in federal prison for the attack when a San Francisco jury found him guilty of multiple state charges in June.
Both the prosecution and defense said the life without parole sentence will be served concurrently with DePape’s federal sentence. It has not yet been determined where he will serve his punishment.
Suspect in custody after shots fired at Atlanta Four Seasons
A police officer and a suspected shooter are recovering after gunfire broke out at a building that houses a Four Seasons Hotel and residences in Atlanta Tuesday. The Atlanta police chief said the officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
UPDATE: Barricaded Gunman turned Active Shooter Situation Zone 5 at 75 14th Street Sound from Mayor Andre Dickens & Chief Darin Schierbaumhttps://t.co/TjSDcj3YTj
Authorities say the man fired at least once from the balcony of a residence on the 33rd floor of the 53-story high-rise building. They say he also shot through walls and doors, but no other injuries were reported.
Police said the suspect lives in the residential portion of the building and was not a guest at the Four Seasons hotel portion.
Yankees deny Dodgers a World Series sweep with Game 4 win
Despite another Freddie Freeman home run — becoming the first player to homer in games 1, 2, 3, and 4 — the Yankees crushed the Dodgers 11-4 in Game 4 Tuesday night in the Bronx, highlighted by three home runs including a grand slam by shortstop Anthony Volpe.
The game also featured an odd moment when Yankees fans tried to pry a foul ball out of the glove of Dodgers’ Mookie Betts. The fans were escorted from their seats by stadium security after that play.
The 11 runs were the most by the Yankees in a World Series game since Game 5 of the 1978 series when they scored 12 against the Dodgers.
Now the Yankees are hoping to do what no other team has done in Major League Baseball history: come back from being down 3-0 in the Fall Classic to win it all.
The Dodgers still just need one more win to claim the championship.
Gangs in Haiti struck US Embassy vehicles and UN helicopter with gunfire
Gang violence in Haiti’s capital continues to escalate and now it’s sparking concerns for safety among United States and United Nations personnel in the country. Gunfire from gang members reportedly struck two U.S. Embassy vehicles on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and hit a U.N. helicopter on Thursday, Oct. 24.
The gunfire didn’t injure any personnel but the attacks and uptick in chaos around the U.S. Embassy in Haiti is forcing the evacuation of 20 diplomats from Port-Au-Prince.
The apparent targeting of the helicopter will reportedly cause U.S. airlines at Port-au-Prince’s international airport to hold off on operations once again in Haiti’s capital.
Earlier this year, U.S. airlines like Spirit, JetBlue and American suspended flights at Port-au-Prince’s international airport.
The suspension of humanitarian flights comes as Haiti is coming off a temporary cancellation of international cargo ships into Port-Au-Prince after boats were shot at last month, making getting much-needed food aid to Haitians facing hunger even more difficult.
The U.N. Special Representative for Haiti Maria Isabel Salvador said on Tuesday, Oct. 22, to the United Nations Security Council that daily life in Haiti is deteriorating quickly.
“The situation in Haiti has regrettably worsened. There are more than 700,000 internally displaced persons, which represents a 22% increase in the last three months,” Salvador said. “The political process, despite initial advances, which I reported in July, is now facing significant challenges, turning hope into deep concern.”
The U.S. ambassador described the recent attacks on international personnel as a reaction to a more aggressive stance by law enforcement in combatting gang violence in Haiti. A U.N.-backed multinational security force has been deployed to several areas where gang attacks have been launched. Their efforts have reportedly led to the recent casualties of several gang members.
Harris, Trump look for votes in battlegrounds with 2 weeks to go
With exactly two weeks to go until Election Day, both candidates for president are blitzing the battleground states. Harris, Trump look for more votes in battlegrounds with 2 weeks to go
With two weeks to go until Election Day, the presidential candidates are crisscrossing the country trying to pick up any undecided voters that remain.

“So, I think that we are facing a choice in this election; it’s not about party, it’s about right and wrong,” Cheney said. “And I certainly have many Republicans who will say to me, ‘I can’t be public.’ They do worry about a whole range of things including violence, but they’ll do the right thing.”
In Wisconsin, Harris described her opponent former President Donald Trump as “unstable,” referencing comments made by former Trump cabinet members.
“I think it’s very important that we acknowledge — and I have said publicly that Donald Trump is an unserious man,” Harris said, “and the consequences of him ever being President of United States again are brutally serious. Brutally serious.”
Former President Trump visited North Carolina on Monday where he surveyed the damage created by Hurricane Helene and continued his criticism of the Biden administration’s relief efforts.
“The power of nature, nothing you can do about it, but you got to get a little bit better crew and to do a better job than has been done by the White House,” Trump said. “It’s been not good. Not good. I’m here today in western North Carolina to express a simple message to the incredible people of the state: I’m with you and the American people are with you all the way. We’re going to continue to be with you. We’ll see what happens with the election. And we’re, on January 20th, you’re going to have, I think, a new crew coming in to do it properly and help you in a proper manner.”
Trump made two more stops while in North Carolina Monday, holding a rally and speaking at a faith leaders’ event.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22, former President Trump will continue campaigning in North Carolina with a rally in Greensboro, and Vice President Harris will sit down for an interview with NBC News in Washington, D.C.
Blinken in Israel to revive Gaza cease-fire talks after Sinwar death
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Israel once again — his 11th visit to the region since war broke out between Israel and Hamas a little more than a year ago.

This visit is the first stop on a wider tour of the Middle East in which Blinken is expected to revive talks for a cease-fire in Gaza in the wake of the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Blinken’s weeklong trip comes as the Middle East braces for Israel’s response to an Iranian missile attack on Tel Aviv earlier this month.
Teen arrested after 2 adults, 3 children killed in shooting at Washington home
Officials with the King County Sheriff’s Office said another teenager who had been injured went to a Seattle hospital. They said that teenager and the teen in custody both live at the home where the shooting happened, but did not know the relationships between those teens and the five people killed.
“I just don’t know the relationships, so I’m going to withhold confirming any relationships, but it does appear to be that this is a family incident,” Deputy Mike Mellis told reporters Monday. “Clearly, a domestic violence incident that involves not only a young man — who’s now in significant trouble — and it involves firearms. Young men and firearms.”
Reports say he has chronic myeloid leukemia, a form of bone marrow cancer, and he’s undergoing treatment at Rikers Island prison in New York where he’s serving a 16-year sentence.
This is just the latest health issue Weinstein has faced behind bars. Last month, he had emergency heart surgery to alleviate a significant amount of fluid in his lungs and heart, and he was hospitalized in July with COVID-19 and double pneumonia.
Student loan payments pause extended for 8 million SAVE plan borrowers
Eight million Americans will be able to continue holding off paying back their student loans for at least another six months, the Department of Education confirmed on Monday.
The Education Department said save enrollees will be placed in an interest-free general forbearance for at least six months pending the outcome of legal challenges to the plan.

For Game 2 on Saturday, Oct. 26, also at Dodger Stadium, the least expensive ticket is $1,209.
Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 28 and 29, head back to the East Coast, with the cheapest tickets for Yankees Stadium costing $1,385 and $1,110, respectively. A possible Game 5 is showing the same as Game 4.
And “if necessary,” Games 6 and 7 would be back in LA, with the cheapest tickets going for around $1,300 or more.
As for the good seats behind home plate at Dodger Stadium, those tickets are going for $1,500 or more.
